Ren LaForme

About our guest: Ren LaForme is managing editor at the Poynter Institute, a journalism nonprofit based in St. Petersburg, Florida. He previously wrote about technology and led training for journalists about tools, social media/engagement, headline writing, SEO and more. Ren is a current James Beard Awards Emeritus Committee member and just wrapped a six-year stint on the James Beard Journalism Awards Committee.

Ren has a master’s degree in journalism and media studies from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University at Buffalo. He is from a small town near Niagara Falls, New York, and lives in St. Petersburg with his wife, Keeley; baby boy, Augie; and dog, Finn. He enjoys drinking and brewing saison — once winning a homebrew competition to make a full batch of a hoppy mixed-culture beer at nearby Green Bench Brewing — and playing guitar in Crud Lite, his perennially underachieving punk band.

  1. That’s awesome! Too bad my book didn’t get nominated for a James Beard (yes, that is a self-pitying sniff you hear) but I will try to see my way to putting that aside and enjoying the valuable conversation. Kidding of course, ok, not entirely.
