Ink & Drink: Uncovering the Historical Bonds of Tattoos and Fermentation Across Cultures by Frances Tietje-Wang is now live on CraftBeer.com. This is the third article as part of the 2025 Diversity in Beer Writing Grant.
Beth Demmon, grant co-coordinator and editor of the piece, shared that, “At first glance, Frances took what seemed to be two unrelated art forms (brewing and tattooing) and was able to tie them together in a way that really demonstrated the intersection between them. Their initial pitch explained not only why they wanted to tell this story, but how they planned to with specific examples of current sources, academic references, and imagery that showed a pattern through history into the modern-day brewing and tattooing industries. Their willingness to ask questions and work through edits throughout the process made it a great partnership for the grant program. The end result is surprising, interesting, educational, unique, and thorough – all of the elements of a great story.”
Thanks to grant co-coordinators Beth Demmon and Hollie Stephens, past director Kate Bernot, Adam Dulye of Craftbeer.com, and Allagash Brewing for their continued sponsorship of this important program in its eighth year. You can find all previous stories here.
